Coaching: The benefits of a holistic view of life at work

Second, while staff development subjects several people in one department to the same training, coaching is one-on-one, its programs customized for the executive’s personality.  The embattled, confused leader must re-discover his dreams and aspirations to fire up his energies and set him back on course, which hopefully would blaze a new and more passionate career trail.

What was once a stop-over job became a calling for Bernadette Molina, the Finance and Foundation Manager of The Greater North Michigan Avenue Association (GNMAA), a leading non-profit business organization in Chicago.  She attributes her change of heart to her former boss and mentor who emphasized to her that “your growth is my growth. [Coaching] challenges the staff to grow in their careers and encourages a healthy relationship among their peers.” She adds never to underestimate the “fun working environment” that a dedicated coach can create among motivated leaders.  “Happiness is priceless,” says Molina, “Some people would elect to stay in their job if they find that in general, they are happy in their workplace.” It also reduces “frequent turnovers that cost companies a lot of money.”

Farah Ramos, the Vice-President of Morgan Stanley Inc., the New-York-based global financial service firm that provides investment advisement to corporations, governments, and financial institutions, echoes, “Coaching contributes to the firm’s profitability in the long run…Managers are developed, whom if hired externally would cost more than internal promotion.  Coaching also creates a positive impact and makes [the executives] more efficient and productive.”

Executive coaching nurtures greater dedication from senior leaders and creates a greater sense of commitment, which translates into a trickle down effect to the more junior staff.  As the ones who steer the ship grasp a new vision of the company’s direction and their place in it, their example and constant communication with the people they head can inspire others to find their own place and make their own unique contribution.
