Book for local government CIOs out in 2009

CIO Leadership for Cities & Countries: Emerging Trends & Practices to be published in 2009 is seen to help the local government CIO.

The stories of local government chief information officers in their unique workplace are to be compiled in a book called CIO Leadership for Cities & Countries: Emerging Trends & Practices.

The Public Technology Institute (PTI), the national, non-profit technology organization created by and for cities and counties, is publishing the book.

PTI said the book will be written specifically for the local government CIO, with the end-in-view of helping them “cope with their constantly evolving role as local governments rely more on technology to deliver services to the community; as elected officials increasingly turn to CIOs for guidance on how technology can improve operations and make government more efficient; and as citizens have come to expect more interactive, technology-dependent ways to communicate with government.”

PTI executive director Alan Shark said that the development of the book is timely, owing to the “tough economic climate we are facing today, with local governments having to maintain or even increase services while coping with budget shortfalls and often reductions in the workforce—the challenges that CIOs face are critical.”

The book, according to PTI, will describe the professional skill sets that CIOs need to be successful, and will include tried-and-true management practices that technology executives can learn from and tailor to their specific needs.

”By providing practical examples and insight from leading technology executives, this book will become a ‘must-read’ for anyone interested in the local government CIO profession,” Shark said.

The book will be released in early 2009, and will include articles and chapters written by leading local government CIOs and technology directors, as well as contributions from executives representing the private sector and academia.
